About The First Tee of Charlotte

Ø      The First Tee of Charlotte was established in 2001 to teach children life skills through the game of golf. It is one of 200 chapters of The National First Tee organization. The First Tee program is based on nine core values that are taught through the character education program: responsibility, respect, honesty, judgment, courtesy, integrity, confidence, perseverance, and sportsmanship.

Ø      At its permanent home at Revolution Park Golf Course, The First Tee of Charlotte has introduced golf and its life skills to over 3000 children in our community.  Key partnerships have been formed with the YMCA, YWCA, Alexander Youth Network, CMS and PAL, Johnson C. Smith and other organizations.

Ø      The First Tee's Life Skills Experience is a curriculum based program developed by educators. A recent national survey of First Tee parents revealed some powerful data:  74% observed a positive change in their child's communication skills; 74% observed a positive change in their child's display of responsibility; 76% observed an increase in their child's confidence; 52% observed that their child made better grades in school and 66% observed a positive change in their child's social ability.

Ø      60% of First Tee participants are between the ages of 9-13, among the most critical years in a child’s development.  These children have formed positive relationships with their First Tee coach, which has shown to increase the likelihood of forming positive relationships with classroom teachers and mentors.

Ø      The First Tee of Charlotte through its partnership with Mecklenburg County Park and Rec opened its permanent Learning Academy in April 2009.  This facility is adjacent to Revolution Park Golf Course, currently under renovation, as well as newly developed practice areas including 1 practice putting green, 2 short game practice greens and a full driving range. The Learning Academy is located on Charlotte’s west side and easily accessible from both I-85 and I-77 as well as city transit.

Ø      The facilities will be designed so individuals will pay to use the practice area and course when it is not being used for the children’s program.  These fees will help offset operating expenses.

Ø      Children will be asked to pay a nominal fee for the instruction and use of the facility.  No child will be turned away because of the inability to pay.  Scholarship and work opportunities will be available.

Ø      The multi-million dollar investment in the west side community of Charlotte will provide economic and community development of the area.
